“…what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power…” Ephesians 1:19 NKJV. Might sound redundant, but it’s not.
There are two different words used in this verse for power. In the first part of the verse, power is used for the Greek word dunamis, which is that unmatched strength, energy, might, great force, and ability which is able to overcome any type of resistance. That is the force that was evident in the life of Jesus through the working of miracles.
That dunamis power works towards us who believe according to the working of His mighty power. The second word here for which power is used is kratos, which refers to God’s dominion authority. It is His manifested power shown effectively through His reining majesty.
We experience the dunamis power of God to the degree that His kratos power has been established as the governing authority over each area of our lives.
As we head into this new year, (this 49-day journey is a countdown towards Rosh Hashanah on September 18th) I want the dunamis power of God to be evident in my life greater than it ever has been. But I want His kratos, dominion power ruling my life even more.
The prayer of my heart this morning was, “Search me, oh God. X-ray me by the power of your Holy Spirit, and examine every area of my heart and mind. Let there be nothing within me that I’m clinging to or that I’m entertaining that would cause a sense of distance in my relationship with You.”
When I pray like this, I can almost picture an x-ray machine scanning me slowly from head to toe. And what becomes easily detectable are any areas where that scan seems to hit a glitch and cannot move or glide easily due to debris or resistance. I have to choose to pause and yield those areas to Him, but as I do, His dunamis power is able to overcome any type of resistance, and I can always feel the surge of His power begin to flow.
As I close, the phrase I feel led to land on is, “able to overcome any type of resistance.” My prayer for us is that we will step into a great degree of God’s power this next year. That we may be recognizable as children with yielded hearts, operating in the exceeding greatness of His power.
